As a Sparkbox Frontend Design Apprentice, you’ll spend four months with our team in Dayton, OH, learning the skills needed to be a web designer in today’s quickly changing responsive web world. You’ll start by learning to write semantic HTML and CSS and quickly progress to working on projects where you create wireframes and interface design. We’ll guide you through the iterative design process, point out things to keep in mind, and help you arrive at a compelling visual concept. You’ll also learn to code your concepts like a pro, using Sass to help write, manage, and compile your CSS. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills to function as a full-fledged frontend designer. You’ll also have a couple of projects to add to your portfolio and knowledge to tackle what’s next.

What We’re Looking For

Each year, we’re asked to describe what it takes to be a successful Sparkbox apprentice. Here are some core values we look for.

Passion for Design

We’re looking for people who are passionate about good design and can show this passion through past design work. Self-initiated projects are always a great way to show that you love the work you do. We don’t expect you to have mastered your craft, but a fluency in design concepts like typography, hierarchy, and layout is definitely preferred—whether you’ve used them for the web or another medium.

Hunger

Applicants who make it to the final interview round all have a tremendous hunger to learn, and they back it up with their own experimentation. To be successful in a career doing web stuff, you have to be continually learning—you have to be hungry for knowledge.

Teachability

Having a strong desire for knowledge is one thing—being willing to hear authentic, constructive criticism (and do something about it) is another. This is a learning role. You have to be willing to check your ego at the door and do what it takes to improve. This is a characteristic we expect of all Sparkboxers, and if you make it into the apprenticeship, you’ll see that we learn as much from you as you do from us.

Diversity

The past few years have taught us that we can always do more to create an inclusive environment—both in our industry and in our team. Sparkbox has been evolving our benefits, such as adding options to better support working moms and dads, and we’ve been working to build a team where we acknowledge our own faults, make all feel welcome, and humbly help one another grow. One way we can grow is by including more teammates who challenge our worldviews and ways of thinking. To this end, we give you the opportunity on the application to share how you will bring a diverse perspective to the apprenticeship. This will be a key consideration in our review process.

Are You Ready?

Take a hard look at yourself to determine if you’re a good fit—there are many great apprenticeships out there if this one is not for you.
