Cookies

Effective May 14, 2024

We use cookies on our website. A cookie is a small piece of data that a website stores on the visitor's computer or mobile device.

We use cookies for certain website functionality and to collect information about user activity, page visits, time on pages, etc. for aggregated statistics that we use to improve the site.

These are the services that we use on the site that use cookies or otherwise track user data. You can grant or deny consent for any services whose cookies are not strictly necessary for the functionality of the site.

Google Tag Manager (Google Analytics)

We use Google Tag Manager (a.k.a. Google Analytics) for analytics, which we use to discover which pages are visited the most, what search terms are used to find articles, and other information about the performance of the site as experienced by users.

Google Tag Manager sets the following cookies:

_gcl_au
Google Tag Manager sets the cookie to experiment with advertisement efficiency of websites using their services (we do not serve ads).
_ga_*
Google Analytics sets this cookie to store and count page views.
_ga
Google Analytics sets this cookie to calculate visitor, session, and campaign data and track site usage for the site's analytics report. The cookie stores information anonymously and assigns a randomly generated number to recognise unique visitors.

We only collect analytics by default for users in the US, except for users who are in California or who have "Do not track" settings turned on in their browsers. You may opt in or out of analytics tracking at any time.

YouTube Video Embeds

On some pages, we embed YouTube videos related to the contents of the page. We use the "Enhanced privacy mode" version of the embeds that use the "youtube-nocookie.com" domain. However, YouTube still tracks user information through other mechanisms like local storage instead of using cookies.

When YouTube embeds are loaded, they track at least the following information in local storage, but there may be more information tracked depending on how you interact with the embeds and whether you're logged into YouTube in the same browser.

yt-remote-device-id
YouTube sets this to store the user's video preferences using embedded YouTube videos.
yt.innertube::requests
YouTube sets this to register a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen.
yt-remote-connected-devices
YouTube sets this to store the user's video preferences using embedded YouTube videos.
yt.innertube::nextId
YouTube sets this to register a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen.

By default, we display a thumbnail that links to YouTube instead of loading the embed. We include a caption that has a button for granting consent, which will load any embeds on the current page and save your preference for loading YouTube embeds going forward. You may also opt in or out here at any time.
