In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, staying ahead of emerging technologies and industry shifts isn’t just beneficial, it’s essential. At Sparkbox, we’ve discovered a powerful approach to continuous learning that keeps our team sharp and delivers tangible value to our clients: expedition teams.
Why Expedition Teams?
We launched our first expedition team about 10 months ago, with a focus on AI. The timing couldn’t have been better. As AI transformed from buzzword to business reality, we already had a dedicated group constantly taking the pulse of what was happening and how it could benefit both our work and our clients’ success.
The success of our AI expedition team led us to launch two additional teams about four months ago: accessibility and design systems. These aren’t just trendy topics; they’re core to what we do at Sparkbox and areas where the landscape continues to shift rapidly.
What’s particularly exciting is how these teams naturally overlap and cross-pollinate. AI team members might discover something relevant to design systems and share it at the design systems catch-all meeting. This creates a web of knowledge sharing that strengthens our entire approach.
How Expedition Teams Work
Each team operates with a simple but effective structure. We hold meetings that anyone across the company can join, run by a small, dedicated team who spend time each week researching and learning. Ongoing communication happens through Slack channels, and insights are shared company-wide through bi-monthly demos.
The beauty of this approach is that it leverages our commitment to continuous learning that builds across each of our teams, from project management to ux, design, and development. Rather than scattered individual research, we’re channeling that energy into focused, collaborative exploration.
Why Should Our Clients Care?
For our clients, expedition teams translate into immediate, practical benefits such as:
Informed Decision-Making
When clients ask, “Can we do this? Would this help us?” we can provide well-researched, tested answers. We’re not just keeping up with trends; we’re evaluating what’s ready for prime time and what’s still half-baked, and trust us, there is plenty of both out there.
Efficiency Gains
Our teams are constantly identifying tools and approaches that can make client work more efficient. We test these solutions internally before recommending them, ensuring clients get proven value rather than experimental overhead.
Future-Proofing
Whether it’s AI integration, accessibility compliance, or systematic design thinking, our expedition teams ensure we’re bringing forward-thinking approaches to every project. Clients benefit from our proactive learning rather than reactive scrambling. This helps us ask the right questions when starting a project to continually provide innovative solutions.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
The best solutions emerge when designers, developers, and project managers problem-solve together. Our expedition teams model this collaborative approach, bringing diverse perspectives to complex challenges. This collaboration is not only helpful for our learning and solutions, but it is also how we have the most fun together and grow as a team. Our favorite projects are the ones we get to do ‘together’ across all of our teams.
A Living, Breathing Approach
What I love most about the expedition teams is their organic nature. Team membership is flexible; people can step up as leaders or step back as interests and workloads change. If AI becomes less critical and a new technology emerges, teams can evolve accordingly. The goal isn’t a rigid structure; it’s sustained learning and knowledge sharing that directly benefits our work and our clients’ success.
Expedition teams give us a sustainable way to stay ahead of the curve. They’re not just about keeping up with the latest tools; they’re about building the expertise and collaborative culture that allows us to deliver exceptional value to our clients. This is an opportunity for Sparkboxers from many different disciplines to work, explore, and create together. It’s learning with purpose, collaboration with focus, and innovation with immediate practical value.
