What You’ll Be Doing
In the first months of your apprenticeship, you’ll learn Sparkbox’s convictions on priority of content, value of design, semantic HTML, and mobile-first CSS. You’ll be exposed to our Github-centric project management, deployment processes, best practices for clean code and separation of concerns, and unit testing techniques.
By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be interacting as a full-fledged developer. With new confidence, you’ll have some work under your belt—and that’s when the real fun begins.
What We’re Looking for
Each year, we’re asked to describe what it takes to be a successful Sparkbox apprentice. Here are some core values we look for:
Hunger
The folks who make it to the final round of our apprenticeship application process all have a tremendous hunger to learn, and they back it up with their own experimentation. To be successful in a career on the web, you have to be continually learning—you have to be hungry for knowledge.
Teachability
In this role, you must be open to constructive criticism. We’re going to challenge you and your current understanding of the web. For six months, we’ll give you guidance to dive deep, and we expect you to be ready to soak it all in. In this apprenticeship, learning will be mutual—you’ll see that we learn as much from you as you do from us.
Diverse Perspective
The past few years have taught us that we can always do more to create an inclusive environment—both in our industry and on our team. Sparkbox has been working to build a team where we acknowledge our own faults, make all feel welcome, and humbly help each other grow. On our apprenticeship application, you’ll share how you can bring a diverse perspective to the apprenticeship.
Are You Ready?
We’ve historically held our apprenticeships in-person at our Dayton office. However, because the entire Sparkbox team is currently working remotely, we’ve decided to shift the 2021 apprenticeship to a fully remote learning experience. We will still expect each apprentice to be available and ready to engage during the hours of 9am–5pm Eastern, Monday through Friday for the full duration of the apprenticeship (July 12, 2021–December 17, 2021).
